Garden Care

You can still keep an eye on your gardens in the winter. Gently brush off heavy snow from trees and shrub branches. If there are limbs that are damaged by ice or snow, prune off to prevent bark from tearing. Allow ice to melt naturally from plants.

Check your stored dahlias, cannas and gladioli bulbs to be sure they are not rotting or drying out. Avoid foot traffic on frozen lawns as this may injure turf grasses.

Store wood ashes in a fireproof container. Apply a little to lilies, asters, lilacs, roses in the spring. Christmas tree boughs can be used to mulch garden perennials.

Start your seed shopping now and plan your garden. January is the busiest time for seed companies. When your seeds arrive they should be stored between 40 to 50 degrees. You can store them in your basement in a shoebox. Some people store their seeds in the fridge in something airtight.
